Becoming an American Red Cross Lifeguard Becoming an American Red Cross Lifeguard means stepping into a role of leadership, safety, and community responsibility. Lifeguards are trained professionals who prevent accidents, respond to emergencies, and create a safe environment for swimmers of all ages.
What It Takes
ARC Lifeguard Certification prepares candidates with the skills needed to recognize, prevent, and respond to aquatic emergencies. Training focuses on:
• Water rescue skills
• Surveillance and patron safety
• First Aid and Emergency Response
• CPR/AED for the Professional Rescuer
• Teamwork and communication
Prerequisites
To enroll in an American Red Cross Lifeguard course, participants must:
• Be 15 years old by the last day of class
• Successfully complete the pre-course swim test, which includes:
1. Swim-Tread-Swim Sequence: 150-yard continuous swim (freestyle and breaststroke) – 2 Minute Tread – 50-yard swim
2. Timed brick retrieval (swim 20 yards, surface dive, retrieve a 10 lb brick, return to
the surface, and swim back)
